Using market news without being used by it

Headlines are here because the market reacts to them, not because they explain it. Both halves of that sentence are worth taking seriously.

The market has usually already traded on it

By the time a story reaches a headline aggregator, the participants who move prices have generally acted on it. The move you can see happened at the news, not after it, and the recurring experience of buying a good headline and watching the stock fall is the direct consequence.

This is most acute for scheduled news. Results, policy decisions and macro prints are known about in advance and priced in advance, which is why the reaction to a good result is so often a fall — the result was good, and the market had expected better.

What headlines are genuinely useful for

Explaining a move you have already seen. A stock at the top of the day's movers list with no obvious technical reason usually has a story attached, and finding it is the difference between a move you understand and a move you are guessing at.

They are also how you distinguish a company-specific event from a sector one. Three stocks in the same sector moving together on the same day is rarely three separate stories.

Reading against your own position

The failure mode worth naming: once you hold something, headlines stop being information and start being confirmation. Every supporting story reads as important and every contradicting one reads as noise, and the effect is strongest exactly when the position is going against you.

The practical defence is to read the news on a stock before taking the position rather than after, and to notice when you are searching for a reason to hold rather than for what is true.

Where these come from

Headlines are aggregated from public feeds published by Indian news outlets, and each links back to the publisher. We do not write them, do not verify them, and do not claim authorship of any of them. Where a full article is readable here, the reporting and the responsibility for it remain the original publisher's.
